The Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce and Rocky Outdoor Gear Store present
the 1st Annual Nelsonville Starbrick Criterium on June 1, 2008. It’s
an exciting day of races and events for cyclists, enthusiasts, families,
and spectators. There truly is something for everyone, regardless of
age or skill level.
The multi-faceted event features four races for all levels, a bicycle
safety clinic, and a helmet give-away program for all the young racers.
Frankie Andreu, one of the most popular and well-respected names in
American professional cycling, will be on hand to sign autographs and
do the announcing. Frankie competed in the Tour de France nine times
and was on Lance Armstrong’s team five of the seven times Lance won.
He also placed high in World Cup events, World Championships, Spring
Classics, and two Olympic Games: 1988 placing 8th and 1996 placing fourth
in Atlanta.
What is Criterium Racing?
It is a unique form of cycling that stresses high-speed racing in a
thriving urban atmosphere. It combines the most exciting elements of
popular sports with the large-scale appeal of downtown arts and music
festivals, making it the most enduring form of cycling in North America
with an ever-growing following of fans.
Because criteriums are historically run on short laps through city streets,
they offer spectators the opportunity to watch Olympians and world and
national champions up-close as they ride at top speed for up to two
hours. This has made the criterium format the most spectator-friendly
form of cycling. When staged according to this format, these races often
draw more than 5,000 fans per event.
Cyclebration ’08
Cyclebration is a summer-long, four-event race series to determine the
best criterium racers in the Mid-West. This year, Cyclebration racers
will compete in Nelsonville, in addition to Lancaster, Columbus, and
New Albany.
These racers are premier competitive athletes, so watching them whiz
by is sure to be an experience you’re not likely to forget. Columbus
promoter Tym Tyler, with TeamCOLUMBUS—one of the most comprehensive
and influential cycling organizations in the country, is organizing
this series.
1st Annual Starbrick Criterium
We couldn’t let the professional racers be the only ones in on the
fun! Thanks to a headlining sponsorship by the Nelsonville Chamber of
Commerce and Rocky Outdoor Gear Store, and an organizing committee made
up of the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of
Nelsonville, and Hocking College, the Cyclebration ’08 races are just
a small part of a jam-packed afternoon of events.

Criterium Racing in Nelsonville
Nelsonville’s Historic Square Arts District makes a great backdrop
for criterium racing. Nelsonville’s public square is home to over
twenty art galleries, shops and artist boutiques and known regionally
and nationally as a thriving arts community and shopping destination.
Numerous vendors are expected to line the sidewalks of the square.
May’s Final Friday event is on May 30, just two days before the Starbrick
Criterium. On the final Friday of every month the galleries and shops
stay open late for Final Fridays on the Square. From 6:00 pm to 10:00
pm visitors are treated to the openings of new exhibits at the galleries,
special artist demonstration, street musicians, drum circles, and artist
booths on the sidewalks.
